Supertram price increases – from Wednesday 1 January 2025
Earlier this year we brought Supertram back into public control after almost three decades of private management which was marked by underinvestment and limited expansion of the network.
South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) is committed to turning Supertram around with record investment to renew and improve the service, so we give passengers a much better service.
Since March, when we brought Supertram back under public control we have seen successes and improvements across the network. We now have more people travelling by tram and new ticket machines have helped increase our revenue and significantly reduced fare evasion. Our trams are much cleaner thanks to our promise to deep clean all our trams and stops.
While we have worked closely with the Government to drive significant investment into Supertram, to ensure we keep improving the network we will need to increase some fares next year.
We have achieved all this in the first nine months and our journey continues. The next stop is a decision on taking back control of our buses so we can create an integrated transport system that connects people with opportunities.
Why are we increasing fares?
One of the benefits of Supertram coming public ownership is that we control fare increases. Having to charge passengers more is not a decision we take lightly or for the sake of profit; it’s out of necessity.
Tram fares will typically rise by 5% compared to private bus operators whose ticket price increases range from 6% to 40%. Some customers will have to pay even more as one operator is discontinuing tickets and replacing them with an alternative that will cost more than 40% of the current price.
On Supertram, most passengers will be able to avoid the fare increase or take advantage of better value tickets by using the TSY app. Adult Tram 1-Day, Adult Tram 7-Day, Child 7-Day and Family 7-day tickets will all be cheaper than current prices onboard and family tram 1-day tickets will be frozen when bought on the app next year. In addition, armed forces and child day ticket prices will be frozen regardless of how they are purchased.
We can also offer advice through the TSY website and Traveline on which ticket to buy to get the best value for money.
