Supertram essential repair works in Hillsborough – 4 – 5 November and 18 – 19 November 2023

South Yorkshire Supertram Limited (SYSL) are planning on carrying out essential repair works on sections of track in the Holme Lane area of Hillsborough. These works form part of their ongoing maintenance programme and are critical to extend the lifespan of the tram network and maintain the reliable, comfortable and safe level of service customers have come to expect.

The works have been split over two weekends, between 7:30 and 23:00 each day, to allow concrete repairs to be carried out to the inbound and outbound track slabs and carriageway as follows:

 

  • Holme Lane Outbound – Saturday 4 November and Sunday 5 November
  • Holme Lane Inbound – Saturday 18 November and Sunday 19 November

 

Works will also be carried out on Ridgeway Road, near Manor Top, to replace the overhead line component on the tram network over the weekend of Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 November.

How will the works affect tram services?

During the works, the Supertram network will run to a revised timetable.

On Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 November 2023 (inclusive), trams will operate as follows:

 

  • Blue route tram services will run between Halfway and Hillsborough/Middlewood only
    • Malin Bridge, tram stop will not be served
  • Yellow Route, Purple Route and Tram Train services will not be affected and will run as normal.

 

On Saturday 18 November 2023 (inclusive), trams will operate as follows:

 

  • Blue route tram services will run between Birley Lane and Hillsborough/Middlewood only
    • Malin Bridge, Halfway, Westfield, Waterthorpe, Beighton/Drakehouse Lane, Crystal Peaks, Moss Way, Donetsk Way, Hackenthorpe and Birley Moor Road tram stops will not be served
  • Yellow Route, Purple Route and Tram Train services will not be affected and will run as normal.

 

On Sunday 19 November 2023 (inclusive), trams will operate as follows:

 

  • Blue route tram services will run between Sheffield Station and Hillsborough/Middlewood only
    • Malin Bridge, Halfway, Westfield, Waterthorpe, Beighton/Drakehouse Lane, Crystal Peaks, Moss Way, Donetsk Way, Hackenthorpe, Birley Moor Road, Birley Lane, White Lane, Gleadless Townend, Hollinsend, Manor Top, Spring Lane, Arbourthorne Road, Park Grange, Park Grange Croft, and Granville Road tram stops will not be served
  • Purple Route tram services will not operate
  • Yellow Route, and Tram Train services will not be affected and will run as normal.

Alternative bus services and ticket acceptance

For those that need to travel during the works period, the following services are available as an alternative to the tram:

Bus services

For many journeys there are existing bus routes that offer alternative travel options to the tram including:

  • Service 61 and 62 – Malin Bridge – Hillsborough Interchange
  • Services 81 and 82 – Malin Bridge – Hillsborough – Sheffield city centre
  • Service 252 – Halfway – Crystal Peaks – Gleadless Townend- Sheffield city centre
  • Services 53 and 53a – Halfway to Sheffield city centre
  • Service 120 – Halfway – Crystal Peaks – Manor Top – Sheffield city centre
  • Services 1a and 11 – Herdings and Sheffield city centre
  • Services 18 and 18a – Herdings and sheffield city centre

 

The Journey Planner can help people plan their alternative journey during the works. Some services may be subject to minor diversions as a result of the traffic management for the replacement works. Up to date information will be available on our disruptions page.

Dedicated tram replacement bus service

We are currently looking into whether we can procure a dedicated tram replacement bus service on Saturday 18 November between Birley and Halfway and on Sunday 19 November between Sheffield city centre and Halfway to help people make their journeys. Further information will follow in a future brief.

Ticket acceptance

Tickets purchased on Supertram, including Stagecoach bus/tram tickets will also be valid between Hillsborough and Malin Bridge on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 November. Information on ticket acceptance for Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 November will be provided shortly.

Park and ride

Malin Bridge and Middlewood Park & Ride sites will remain open during these works. Customers can buy their travel ticket onboard.
