Supertram rail replacement works from Saturday 25 May 

We plan to carry out rail replacement engineering works commencing on Saturday 25 May in Sheffield city centre, with further works planned in other areas of the tram network over the summer. Wherever possible, works are being scheduled to coincide with school holidays to minimise passenger disruption.

Supertram connects millions of people to jobs, education, healthcare, shopping, leisure and to visit family and friends – connecting some of the most deprived areas of our region, levelling the playing field for many residents.

These works form part of our ongoing maintenance programme and are critical to extend the lifespan of one the region’s best loved modes of transport. The new rail will give passengers a better travel experience – improving comfort and reducing noise in areas where tracks are currently worn – as well as reducing the risk of closure of the network on safety grounds.

The rail replacement works, carried out by VolkerRail, are scheduled to take place from after the last tram on the evening of Friday 24 May until start of service on Monday 3 June and will affect all tram and Tram Train services. Preparatory overnight works will also be carried out from the evening of Sunday 19 May, but these works will have no impact on tram services. Letters have been posted to affected residents and businesses in the area, notifying them of the proposed works and any disruptions they may cause.

How will the works affect tram services? 

To allow the essential engineering works to take place in the city centre, between Cathedral and the junction above Park Square roundabout, tram and Tram Train services will be subject to alteration from Saturday 25 May until start of service on Monday 3 June.

West Street, City Hall, Cathedral, Castle Square and Fitzalan Square/Ponds Forge tram stops will not be served for the duration of the works.

During the works, the Supertram network will run a revised timetable and services will operate as follows:

  • Blue Route tram services will run between Malin Bridge P & R and University of Sheffield only (omitting Netherthorpe Road tram stop – see below) with a reduced frequency of every 20 minutes during the day
  • Yellow Route tram services will run between Middlewood P & R and University of Sheffield only (omitting Netherthorpe Road tram stop – see below) with a reduced frequency of every 20 minutes during the day
  • Purple Route tram services will run between Herdings Park and Cricket Inn Road only, every 60 minutes
    • Green Route temporary tram services will run between Halfway and Meadowhall Interchange – serving stops on the Blue Route between Halfway and Sheffield Station and the Yellow Route between Hyde Park and Meadowhall Interchange – running up to every 12 minutes during the day
    • Tram Train services will run between Rotherham Parkgate and Sheffield Station – extending beyond Hyde Park to terminate at Sheffield Station – operating to the normal frequency of two services per hour.

In addition, during this time, works will be carried out at Netherthorpe Road tram stop to replace the tram shelters. To ensure the health and safety of both the passengers and site workers, the platform will be closed throughout the works. Trams will not serve Netherthorpe Road tram stop and will, instead, run directly between University of Sheffield and Shalesmoor tram stops, in both directions. Customers travelling towards Middlewood/Malin Bridge should use either the University of Sheffield or Shalesmoor tram stops. Those wishing to travel towards Sheffield city centre should use the bus stop on Broad Lane/Beet Street to access the dedicated tram replacement bus service (TR1) (see below).

What are the alternative travel options? 

Dedicated tram replacement bus service 

We are attempting to secure a dedicated tram replacement bus service, TR1, to help people make their journeys from Saturday 25 May to Sunday 2 June inclusive. The TR1 is proposed to run between the University of Sheffield and Shrewsbury Road (behind Sheffield Railway Station) and serve limited bus stops located near all the affected tram stops along the route as follows:

  • Monday to Saturday: every 6 minutes from approx. 05:30 until 20:00, then every 15 minutes until approx.00:50
  • Sunday: every 6 minutes from approx. 07:00 until 19:00, then every 15 minutes until 00:40.

All tram and multi-modal tickets will be accepted for travel on the TR1 replacement bus service. Customers can buy their ticket in advance using the TSY Mobile app or from a tram conductor.

Active travel 

Sheffield city centre has a range of high quality, pedestrianised walking routes. Depending upon the distance to your destination, it may be quicker to walk – for example the Peace Gardens are only a 15 minute walk from both University of Sheffield and Sheffield Station tram stops.

Alternative Bus services 

There are alternative travel options through the wider South Yorkshire bus network. Our Journey Planner can help people plan their journey during the works. It should be noted that during these works, Supertram tickets will only be accepted on the TR1 bus service.

Park and ride

Halfway, IKEA, Malin Bridge, Meadowhall, Middlewood, Nunnery Square, Rotherham Parkgate and Valley Centertainment Park & Ride sites will remain open during these works, offering free parking to customer as usual. Customers can buy their travel ticket onboard.

Posters and customer notices will be posted at each site advising of the disruptions to tram services and directing them to the TSY web site for further information.

How is this being communicated to the community? 

Our Travel South Yorkshire website, where we bring together information from all of the bus, tram and train operators, makes it easier for people in our communities to plan their journeys and keep up to date with the latest changes.

    • by calling Traveline on 0800 952 0002 (weekdays between 7am and 7pm and at weekends/Bank Holidays between 8am and 7pm).

Journeys may take longer than usual and customers are encouraged to plan ahead and check before they travel.
