Supertram essential rail replacement works in Hillsborough and Shalesmoor – 24 July to 9 August 2023

Supertram essential rail replacement works in Hillsborough and Shalesmoor – 24 July to 9 August 2023

I am writing to inform you that South Yorkshire Supertram Limited (SYSL) is planning to carry out essential rail replacement works on sections of track in the Hillsborough and Shalesmoor areas over the summer. These works form part of their ongoing maintenance programme and are critical to extend the lifespan of the tram network and maintain the reliable, comfortable and safe level of service customers have come to expect.

The works have been split into four areas which were originally planned to be completed by 7 August. However, prolonged rainfall has, regrettably, delayed the works and the revised programme expects works to continue until Wednesday 9 August 2023 as follows:

  • Middlewood Road between the junction with Dixon Road and Keyworth Road – Sunday 23 July to Thursday 27 July – completed
  • Langsett Road between Ripley Street and Forbes Road – Thursday 27 July to Sunday 30 July – completed
  • Infirmary Road between West Don Street and Gilpin Lane – Sunday 30 July to Friday 4 August
  • Shalesmoor – Saturday 5 August to Wednesday 9 August.

Letters have been posted to affected residents and businesses around the Middlewood Road area and will be sent to the other residents and businesses in the other affected work areas, notifying them of the proposed works and any disruptions they may cause, ahead of the works commencing.

How will the works affect tram services?

During the works, the Supertram network will run to a revised timetable.

From Monday 24 July to Tuesday 8 August 2023 (inclusive), trams will operate as follows:

  • Blue route tram services will run between Halfway and Shalesmoor only.
  • Yellow Route tram services will run between Meadowhall Interchange and Cathedral only with the exception of early morning, evening and Sunday journeys which will run between Meadowhall Interchange and Shalesmoor only.
  • Middlewood, Leppings Lane, Hillsborough Park, Malin Bridge, Hillsborough, Bamforth Street, Langsett/Primrose View and Infirmary Road tram stops will not be served.
  • Trams between Shalesmoor, Cathedral and Meadowhall Interchange will operate at slightly different times to normal
  • Purple Route and Tram Train services will not be affected and will operate as normal.

Alternative bus services

For those that need to travel during the works period, the following services are available as an alternative to the tram:

Dedicated tram replacement bus service

A dedicated tram replacement bus service will run to help people make their journeys.

From Monday 24 July until Tuesday 8 August inclusive, a free shuttle bus service, BY1 operated by Wilfreda, will run between Shalesmoor and Middlewood Park & Ride. The service will operate up to every 12 minutes during the daytime, serving limited bus stops located near all the affected tram stops between Shalesmoor and Middlewood Park & Ride except:

  • From Friday 28 July to Sunday 30 July – journeys on service BY1 towards Middlewood will not serve the bus stop near Hillsborough Park tram stop due to traffic management whilst works are carried out on the outbound track on Langsett Road between the junction with Ripley Street and Forbes Road. Services heading towards Shalesmoor are not affected
    • Customers should use alternative bus stops near Hillsborough or Leppings Lane tram stops or make alternative arrangements
  • From Monday 31 July to Friday 4 August – journeys on service BY1 towards Shalesmoor will not serve the bus stop near Infirmary Road tram stops due to traffic management whilst works are carried out on Infirmary Road between West Don Street and Gilpin Lane. Services heading towards Middlewood are not affected
    • Customers should use the allocated bus stops near Shalesmoor or Langsett/Primrose View tram stops or make alternative arrangements.

Please find attached a copy of the timetable for service BY1 along with details of the bus stops served for your information.
