What is a Moon Meadow?
A Moon Meadow is a wildflower-rich space specially planted to support night-flying moths and other nocturnal wildlife.
While most wildflower meadows are designed with bees and butterflies in mind, a Moon Meadow focuses on the secret life of the night.
✨ What Makes It Different?
-
Pale, moon-lit flowers – White, cream, and silver blossoms reflect moonlight, making them easier for moths to spot after dark.
-
Night-time fragrance – Many plants chosen for a Moon Meadow release their scent in the evening, guiding moths like a fragrant signpost.
-
Season-long nectar – A variety of flowering plants ensures there’s food for moths from early spring to late autumn.
-
Shelter and habitat – The tall, varied plants and grasses give moths places to rest, hide, and breed.
Why Moths Matter
Moths are more than just night-time fliers — they’re essential pollinators, helping wild plants and garden favourites to thrive. They’re also a key food source for bats, birds, and other creatures. But moth numbers are in decline due to habitat loss, pesticides, and light pollution.
A Moon Meadow offers them a safe, abundant haven where they can feed and flourish — and in turn, helps the whole nighttime ecosystem.
How You Can Help
Even a small patch of Moon Meadow plants in your garden, balcony pots, or community green space can make a difference. By planting for the night, you help keep the natural night-time pollinator network alive.
Here at Ecclesfield Parish Council, we are currently looking to identify areas within the Parish to create our very own Moon Meadows, watch this space…
