Rail Travel disruption Barnsley to Wakefield and Leeds

 

Broken points at Horbury Junction

 

Due to a broken rail at the points at Horbury Junction in West Yorkshire, no trains can run from Darton to Wakefield Kirkgate.

 

This means there are no trains from Barnsley to Leeds until the junction is repaired.

 

A further update will be provided once Network Rail have confirmed a date for an expected repair.

 

How does this affect rail services?

 

There is no direct service from Chapeltown, Elsecar, Wombwell, Barnsley and Darton to Wakefield Kirkgate, Wakefield Westgate and Leeds.

 

There is no direct service to Chapeltown, Elsecar, Wombwell and Darton from Wakefield Kirkgate, Wakefield Westgate and Leeds.

 

The Leeds to Nottingham service will call at Barnsley and Sheffield.

 

Travel options include:

To Wakefield Kirkgate/Wakefield Westgate:

  • Customers should board a train at Meadowhall and connect with a fast service or rail replacement bus in Barnsley for onward journeys to Wakefield Kirkgate/Wakefield Westgate.

 

To Leeds:

  • Customers should board a train at Meadowhall and connect with a fast service or rail replacement bus in Barnsley for onward journeys to Wakefield Kirkgate/Wakefield Westgate and then change for a train to Leeds.

 

Customers will also see a reduction of services in some areas. A summary of service provision is shown below:

 

  • Sheffield to Barnsley – services are reduced from 4 trains per hour (two stoppers and two fast) to 2 train per hour (stopper services).
  • Barnsley to Sheffield – services are reduced from 4 trains per hour (two stoppers and two fast) to 3 trains per hour (1 fast from Leeds and two stoppers).
  • Leeds to Nottingham – services will still run via Barnsley.
  • Nottingham to Leeds – services will run Nottingham to Sheffield only.
  • Lincoln to Leeds – services will still run, but not via Barnsley.
  • Leeds to Lincoln – services will run Sheffield to Lincoln only.
  • Services between Sheffield and Leeds are reduced from 5 trains per hour to 3 trains per hour:

Sheffield to Leeds:

    • Cross Country:
      • Sheffield to Leeds
    • Northern:
      • Sheffield to Leeds via Dearne
      • Nottingham to Leeds – services will run Nottingham to Sheffield only
      • Lincoln to Leeds – services will run via Moorthorpe and will not service Barnsley.

Leeds to Sheffield:

    • Cross Country:
      • Leeds to Sheffield
    • Northern:
      • Leeds to Sheffield via Dearne
      • Leeds to Nottingham – services will run via Barnsley as normal
      • Leeds to Lincoln – services will run Sheffield to Lincoln only.
  • An hourly rail replacement bus service is provided from Barnsley to Darton/Wakefield Kirkgate/Wakefield Westgate
  • Sheffield to Huddersfield – service will run as normal

 

How is this being communicated to customers?

 

Northern are updating all staff regarding the planned timetable changes for this route, from the 8 January, and the variation to ticket types and routing during this disruption period so they can help customers with their enquiries.

 

Northern will also be keeping customers updated via their social media channels, announcements and customer information screens at rail stations.

 

Customers are advised to check before they travel and allow extra time to make their journey. Customers can plan their journey using the National Rail Enquiries Journey Planner at ojp.nationalrail.co.uk.
