Tramlines festival – Hillsborough Park, Friday 26 – Sunday 28 July 2024 – travel by public transport

Please see information received from www.southyorkshire-ca.gov.uk regarding public transports during the Tramlines festival:
As you may be aware this year’s Tramlines festival will be taking part over the weekend of Friday 26, Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 July, at Hillsborough Park, with the capacity to accommodate 40,000 festival goers. Featuring an amazing line-up of music, family entertainment, comedy, poetry and DJ’s along with a tantalising offering of food and drink, the festival is certain to attract large crowds.
South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) and Tramlines festival organisers are urging the public to plan before they travel to the event and to use available public transport services as there are no parking facilities available near the venue.
Travelling to and from the event by public transport
Hillsborough Park is well connected to the city centre by bus and tram services, making travelling by public transport the most convenient way to get to and from the festival.
Travelling by tram
A normal tram service is planned to continue to run throughout the day until the evening on Friday 26, Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 July so people can travel to the venue and others can make their journeys as normal.
To the event
To get to the main stages in Hillsborough Park, festival goers can catch either of the following tram services:
• Yellow Route to Hillsborough Park or Leppings Lane tram stops
• Blue Route to Hillsborough tram stop, which is a five-minute walk to the park.
From the event
Festival goers wanting to travel home via tram will be directed out of the park via the exit at Parkside Road to board the tram at the Leppings Lane tram stop. A queueing system and ticket checks will be in place to direct customers, help to keep people safe, and speed up the boarding process to avoid any issues onboard. No other tram stops will be served.
A revised service will operate to provide trams after the festival from Leppings Lane into the city centre. Services will operate as follows:
Friday 26 July and Saturday 27 July – approx. 21:30 to 22:30 and Sunday 28 July – approx. 20:30 to 22:00:
• Blue Route and Yellow Route services will terminate at Shalesmoor.
• The only services operating between Shalesmoor and Middlewood/Malin Bridge will be event special trams which will serve Leppings Lane city bound tram stop only.
The latest information and travel advice over the festival weekend are available at travelsouthyorkshire.com/tramlines-2024.
Network improvement works
Network improvements are taking place on the Supertram network over the Tramlines weekend affecting Blue Route services between White Lane and Crystal Peaks. A revised service will be running and a rail replacement bus service will be operating to help people make their journeys. Customers should visit travelsouthyorkshire.com/NetworkImprovements to find out more.
Travelling by bus
Information regarding bus services available to travel to the event can be found by using our Journey Planner or other journey planning tools.
Traffic management for the Tramlines event will be in place to ensure the safety of pedestrians and all road users and to ensure public transport from Sheffield city centre can safely pass through the area until the event closes.
Large crowds of festival goers are expected between 21:45 – 23:00 on the Friday and Saturday and 20:45 – 22:00 on the Sunday as the festival draws to an end. To allow these crowds to disperse safely, there may be some changes to bus services travelling through the area.
Customer service advisors will be located at Hillsborough Interchange and most affected stops to provide guidance to passengers. Customers should expect delays to services and prepare for longer journey times.
For security reasons, the two bus stops on Penistone Road – Penistone Road/Parkside Road Stop ID: 37020481 and Penistone Road/Beulah Road Stop ID: 37020475 (near Hillsborough Park/Hillsborough Leisure Centre) – will be suspended at all times over the festival weekend.
Customer information notices will be posted on affected stops in advance of the closure.
A number of bus stops around the festival may also be temporarily suspended after the event ends for safety reasons due to the high volumes of pedestrians.
Festival goers are advised to keep checking our disruptions page for the most up to date information. The latest bus timetables and Journey Planning Tools are available at travelsouthyorkshire.com.
Travelling from outside Sheffield
For those coming from out of Sheffield, the best option is to use the train and then board a Blue Route tram from Sheffield railway station. Anyone travelling from Rotherham can also use the Tram Train service to Sheffield city centre and change to either the Yellow or Blue Route tram service at the Cathedral tram stop.
Alternatively, if travelling by car, there are Park & Ride facilities at nearby Malin Bridge and Middlewood with tram and bus connections to the venue. Further information about Park & Ride sites is available at http://travelsouthyorkshire.com/…/sheffield-park-and-ride.
How will Tramlines festival impact local residents’ journeys?
Hillsborough Park area residents are advised to plan ahead, as the festival could attract up to 40,000 people each day. Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) will be in place to deter attendees from parking on residential streets, lower volumes of traffic and improve public and attendee safety in the area.
Road closures in the area between 21:30 and 23:00 on Friday and Saturday and between 20:30 and 22:00 on Sunday could impact access and egress from properties and residents should expect delays at these times.
Further information and planning ahead
Our Travel South Yorkshire website, where we bring together information from all of the bus, tram and train operators, makes it easier for people in our communities to plan their journeys and keep up to date with the latest changes.
Buses and trams are expected to be busier than normal over the weekend, and journeys may take longer than usual. We are therefore reminding people attending Tramlines or wishing to travel in the area, to plan ahead using our online journey planner tool and prepare for longer journey times. They are also advised to purchase tickets in advance, allow extra time and check before they travel at travelsouthyorkshire.com/disruptions for the latest travel information.
